Meet Diego who attends Preschool at The LifeLink School. I vividly remember his mother sitting in the office tearfully asking us to please consider letting her son into school even though the class was full. She explained that Diego was born with a congenital limb defect on his left arm that subjected him to bullying and ridicule. At only 3 years old Diego had already learned the cruel reality of being different and his mom could not bear for her son to go to public school where she feared he would be mocked and teased.
When we attempted to take Diego’s picture he ran away and cowered in a corner. Mom explained he does not like his picture taken because of his arm. Over the next couple of months, I would see Diego still withdrawn, eating and playing all by himself. I wondered if he would ever adjust to his new surroundings.
Fast forward 5 months and I can hardly believe the amazing change that has taken place in Diego. What was once a hatred for photos is now a love of being in the spotlight. Diego smiles and laughs as he plays in the grass with his friend at snack time, looking up to the sky and dreaming. He runs and plays like any other preschooler and even waves with his little left arm.
Diego has found acceptance, love and the joy of the Lord at The LifeLink School. It is a true testament to just how powerful love is. Love does conquer all!
